Chronic Adjustments and Rehabilitation

The goal of systematic rehabilitation is to restore/maintain strength, endurance, range of motion and prevent dysfunction, leading to premature degeneration.

In a chronic injury, consolidation has already begun to form. Consolidation is the transport of scar tissue, which leads to decreased ranges of motion (10 – 30 days for muscles and tendons; 10 – 30 weeks for ligaments), due to inelasticity, fibrous nature and lack of capillaries. Degeneration results if a chronic injury is allowed to progress (1 – 15 months for muscles; 1 – 15 years for ligaments). Adhesions around a joint can complicate the healing process. Lack of range of motion is the largest impedance at this stage. Isometric exercises and transverse massage break up scar tissue adhesions.

Mechanoreceptors help us maintain our posture, movement, normal muscle tone, volume and strength. They involuntarily enable the body to react to its environment. For example, when a spinal joint and its surrounding tissues are injured in an accident, inflammation, muscle spasm, pain, followed by healing ensues. One need not think about it. It happens automatically via the nervous system, which control the circulatory system, the glandular system and the immune system. The body, being a self healing organism will attempt to rid the body of any invading organism and self regulate in order to reach balance (homeostasis).

An easy method of determining subluxations for a chiropractic neurologist would be to simply assess posture. A tilted head, a high shoulder, a high hip or an internally rotated knee or ankle joint may indicate the nervous systems response to subluxations.

An adjustment is a method of resetting joint mechanoreceptors, which in turn affect internal joint capsule tension, segmental tone, volume and pain. As joint mechanoreceptor activity increase, nocioceptive input decrease. Thus, pain suppression, is achieved through a chiropractic adjustment.
